Achilles Tendinopathy - The Original Achilles Heel
You may have heard of the Achilles heel, but have you heard of Achilles Tendinopathy? Achilles Tendinopathy, also known as Achilles Tendonitis or Achilles tendon pain, is a condition that causes inflammation and pain of the Achilles tendon. Other symptoms may include:
Ankle/heel pain
Ankle stiffness
Ankle weakness
Worsening pain when walking or running
Redness or swelling of the area
The Achilles tendon is the thick band of connective tissue above your heel bone that connects the calf muscles to the heel. It is the largest and strongest tendon in the body. It is utilized in most leg movements including walking, running and jumping, and for this reason is commonly overused. Achilles Tendinopathy is typically an overuse injury and is frequently seen in athletes, especially runners and jumpers due to repetitive activities and stress on the tendon.
Other common causes of Achilles Tendinopathy include:
Over training
Flat feet
A high arch
Hamstring injury or tightness
Walking in high heels
Unsupportive shoes (flats)
Running uphill
What is the difference between Tendonitis and Tendonosis? Tendonitis refers to inflammation of the tendon, while Tendinosis (a chronic condition) refers to small tears in the tissue of the tendon. Fortunately, Achilles Tendinopathy can effectively be treated with physical therapy treatments. Physical therapy for Achilles Tendinopathy aims to decrease pain, reduce inflammation, repair the tendon and restore strength and mobility.
